EARLIEST HOLIDAY MEMORY?
Staying in Sheerness, on the Isle of Sheppey, after I was 5. The spotlight was going for a donkey trip. We used to take a coach there from Victoria station in London.
FIRST TRIP ABROAD?
Visiting my Flemish relations in Bredene, close to Ostend, aged ten. Quite a lot of Belgians used to trip bicycles again then, so it was fairly protected for a kid like me to cycle alongside the coast alone.
HOW WAS TOURING IN YOUR POP MUSIC DAYS?
My band, The Savages, supported Screaming Lord Sutch on the Star-Club in Hamburg in the Sixties. But driving there and again in our previous Bedford van, with out heating, in winter was no joke. We took it in turns to sit down over the engine in the center to maintain heat.
FAVOURITE FOREIGN COUNTRY?
I like America as a result of there’s simply a lot of it, and Portugal. I’ve a small vacation house on the Algarve that I go to in spring and autumn when it’s not too sizzling.
DO YOU LIKE PORTUGUESE CUISINE?
Roast beef and Yorkshire pud is about as unique because it will get for me, meals smart.
DO YOU SPEAK PORTUGUESE?
I can say thanks — obrigado — in Portuguese and that’s about it. But I’m all the time well mannered.
MOST MEMORABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE?
A toss-up between seeing Elvis live in Las Vegas in the Seventies and taking a dip in the thermal waters of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon a couple of years in the past. They say the waters are good for you, so I prefer to suppose I went in a septuagenarian and got here out a 23-year-old.

ARE YOU A GOOD FLYER?
No. I might fly to my place in Portugal in three hours, however I desire to get the ferry to Santander in Spain, spend an evening in Salamanca, and then drive right down to the Algarve, regardless of it taking three days.
I’d love to go to Australia however can’t face the lengthy flight, so I’m ready for Richard Branson or Jeff Bezos to launch a rocket that can take me there in three hours.
